Independent-minded Presidential Candidate Buddy Roemer today issued the following statement on the International Atomic Energy Agency Report on Iran's Nuclear Weapons Effort:

"Yesterday's report from the International Atomic Energy Agency provides evidence of what most of us have known for a long time -- that Tehran has been actively pursuing nuclear weapons capability. Meanwhile, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continues his ridiculous song and dance to the rest of the world that his intentions are benign.

I have said for some time now that Iran is our biggest threat abroad because of its stubbornness, secretiveness, and insistence on isolating itself from the rest of the world. As president, nuclear non-proliferation will be my top international priority, beginning with Iran.

President Obama must act now, before it's too late. My proposal is to prohibit the importation of products to America made with a single drop of Iranian oil in its manufacture or transportation; Congress has this power under Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution. I understand Israel and others have military options in mind, for good reason, but we must first focus our economic might on Iran, asking only that all nuclear weapons development cease. Russia may be able to use its veto to bully the U.N. Security Council and block stricter sanctions on Iran, but we should expect all who wish to access the greatest market on earth, America, to join with us in this ban on products made with Iranian oil. It's time for China and Russia to stop being apologists for Iran and get behind meaningful and effective action to stop nuclear weapons from making their way into the hands of a man that has made clear his intention to "wipe Israel off the map."

Mr. President, there is no time to waste."
