Nadler Lauds Removal of Barricades around Zuccotti Park, Calls for Further Improvements by NYPD

Statement

Date: Nov. 2, 2011
Location: New York, NY

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), representative of Lower Manhattan, responded to news that Mayor Bloomberg will remove barricades around Zuccotti Park, as requested yesterday in a letter that Nadler -- joined by other local elected officials -- sent to the Mayor.

Nadler issued the following statement:

"I am grateful to Mayor Bloomberg for responding so promptly to our request to remove unnecessary and burdensome barricades from around Zuccotti Park. This important move is the first step toward addressing the very real concerns of the Lower Manhattan community. We hope that Mayor Bloomberg now heeds our additional requests -- to enforce noise laws, particularly in regard to frequent and loud drumming, and to immediately solve the problem of public urination and defecation in the vicinity of the Park. As I have stressed repeatedly, the Mayor must protect the needs of Lower Manhattan's residents and businesses as he fulfills his duty to safeguard the First Amendment rights of Occupy Wall Street activists and allows them to continue their important work."
