TJ believes that government policies should encourage prosperity and freedom. People are like kites. Laws and regulations are like the strings attached to kites. A kite cannot fly without a string, but the string cannot be so heavy that it keeps the kite on the ground. TJ understands that we need laws and regulations, but they cannot be so heavy that they drag us down and prevent us from taking flight.

For example, some governments are becoming more interested in regulating what people can eat. One longstanding restriction in Virginia is a law that prevents people from purchasing raw milk. The law is intended to protect people against diseases that may be attributable to consuming raw milk. In 39 states, raw milk can be purchased directly or by purchasing an ownership interest in a cow. In Virginia, a person can consume raw milk if he or she purchases an ownership interest in a cow. There is no reason why someone should have to purchase an interest in a cow rather than purchasing the raw milk directly. This is an unnecessary regulation. People should be free to choose the food they eat. Government should not attempt to eliminate every risk in our lives.
