Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today voted in favor of H.R. 1904, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2011. The legislation would create 3,700 new jobs and boost the U.S. economy by $61.4 billion.
"Every day, we should be pushing the American economy to stand on its own two feet," said Dr. Broun. "The United States currently imports more than 30% of our copper needs when we have the capability to drastically reduce our dependence on foreign resources by producing copper right here at home.
"Not only would this exchange open up the third largest underdeveloped copper mine in the world, it would also support thousands of new America jobs that would consume more than $220 million in annual wages. These are real, sustainable jobs in the private sector -- not government jobs that are funded by the taxpayer dollar.
"From the production of household items to our national defense equipment, copper plays a vital role in our daily lives as well as in the safety and security of our nation. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to vote in favor of American self sufficiency, in favor of job creation, and in favor of economic growth by passing H.R. 1904."
