Governor Vilsack and Lt. Governor Pederson issued the following statement in honor of Labor Day:
"On Labor Day we honor America's workers for their valuable contributions in creating opportunities, not only through the products and services they produce during their work day, but also through their community leadership and initiative after their work day is done.
"America's workers have always embraced leadership and community activism and have always been willing to take responsibility as citizens. Through active, vigilant civic participation, they have helped ensure better opportunities and greater security for us all.
"The efforts of organized labor led to many important advances in worker safety, the 40-hour work week, paid vacation time, health insurance, and many other benefits that millions of American workers now enjoy.
"All Americans have benefited from a higher standard of living and better rights and protections because of the efforts of organized labor to make sure workers were treated fairly, and because of organized labor's progressive ideals for the common interest.
"All of us have a responsibility to honor the legacy of America's workers by working together to create a stronger education system, a more vibrant economy, a fair and secure health care system, and an even better quality of life that all of us can enjoy.
"Best wishes for a safe and happy Labor Day."
