The 6th District is a very unique area in terms of both existing and potential economic drivers. Especially in difficult economic times such as those we face today, the most important thing we must do is support, retain, and build upon our key assets and enterprises. In addition to working with our Federal representatives to retain our military installments in the area, I will continue to help develop the Port of Hampton Roads, and to promote tourism, agriculture, and recreational and commercial use of marine resources.
In order to create more and better paying jobs, however, we must look for new and innovative opportunities. That's why I have worked hard to bring state funding and private business to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) on Wallops Island, and why I have supported the development of wind energy projects off Virginia's coast, as well as the extension of high speed interned broadband infrastructure to the Eastern Shore. I believe we must also continue to expand ecotourism and sustainable aquaculture, and to help our farmers and fishermen improve their return on investment.
