Congressman Alexander Supports Pro-Growth Tax Reform

Statement

Date: Oct. 27, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, released the following remarks after voting in support of H.R. 674, which amends the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to repeal the imposition of 3 percent withholding on certain payments made to vendors by government entities. If the 3 percent withholding tax is implemented as scheduled on January 1, 2013, government entities would be required to withhold 3 percent of payments to persons providing property or services. This provision is set to adversely affect countless taxpaying businesses, farmers, doctors and hospitals, as well as state and local governments, if it is not repealed.

"The last thing our already strained businesses need is substantial new burdens, which will further obstruct critical cash flow and hinder job growth. I--along with 268 of my colleagues--cosponsored this bipartisan bill seeking to eliminate such a needless cost on our job creators currently facing financial uncertainty. We know that tax reform and the removal of excessive regulation is fundamental to creating an economic environment that fosters not only growth but stability. I am proud of the House for passing this pro-growth legislation, and I urge the Senate to take immediate action so that our struggling businesses have one less unnecessary burden hanging over their heads."
