Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (NY 25) offered the following statement on the death today of Libyan Dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
"After a 42 year reign of terror, the Libyan people no longer have to fear Dictator Muammar Gaddafi. His death is a victory for the Libyan people and for all peaceful nations."
"Gaddafi was responsible for ordering the bombing of 1989 Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland that killed 270 people including 189 Americans. Thirty five of those victims were students from Syracuse University traveling home from study abroad. Today we remember all of the victims of Gaddafi's brutal dictatorship. With his death we hope that justice has been served."
"The Libyan people now have an opportunity to unite and build a new government that is inclusive, democratic, and free from radical extremist. There are still many obstacles that must be overcome to stabilize Libya and establish peace for the Libyan people."
