In response to reports by Libya's Transitional National Council that President Muammar Qadhafi has been killed in his hometown of Sirte, U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan (MO-3) issued the following statement:
"Libya's Transitional National Council says Muammar Qadhafi is dead -- the imminent end of his regime is welcome news for the Libyan people. The United States worked in close cooperation with allies at NATO and the United Nations, and with regional partners at the Arab League to end atrocities.
"This transition won't be easy, but the U.S. will continue working with our allies to support Transitional National Council and ensure a peaceful process moving forward.
"I call on all parties to make inclusion a priority in this transition. Last spring, I authored a resolution on the important role women have been playing in democracy movements in Libya and across the Middle East and North Africa. Moving forward, women must have access to leadership roles -- both as recognition for ongoing contributions and to achieve a successful transition."
