"I want to congratulate our law enforcement officials who uncovered the Iranian terror plot and stopped it, and thank them for their continued vigilance. The work they did in this case truly saved lives and stopped a terrorist attack from occurring on our soil."
"I have long been concerned about Iran's growing presence and activity in Latin America and the possible relationship between the terrorist organization, Hezbollah, and the Mexican drug cartels on our Southern border. I have raised this issue several times in committee hearings."
"It is well documented that Iran is using the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Qods Force, and Hezbollah as tools to further its strategic and political objectives in the Western Hemisphere, especially in Latin America. Hezbollah has also established a presence in the U.S. and Canada. A 2009 State Department Country Report on Terrorism found that Hezbollah is the "most technically capable terrorist group in the world" with "thousands of supporters, several thousand members, and a few hundred terrorist operatives."'
"In light of this information, I have introduced H.Res. 429 to document what we know about Iran's activity in the Western Hemisphere. The legislation also urges the Administration to include the Western Hemisphere in the Administration's 2012 National Strategy for Counterterrorism's "Area of Focus," which was absent in the 2011 edition, and to utilize an existing counterterrorism taskforce, lead by the DHS in coordination with members of the Intelligence Community, to examine Iran's presence, activity, and relationships in the Western Hemisphere including its activity in the U.S."
