Defending Life & Securing the Border

Dear friends,

I wanted to give you a brief update on some exciting legislative developments happening in Washington this week.

First, the House of Representatives passed a bill which I co-sponsored entitled the "Protect Life Act", an amendment to the recent Health Care law that prohibits federal funding for abortion. As you may recall, one of most damaging parts of ObamaCare is a provision that changed long standing federal precedent prohibiting federal funding for abortion. The Protect Life Act restores pro-life protections to ensure taxpayer dollars are not used to violate the sanctity of life. Although we still have a ways to go in defending the unborn, this legislation is a step in the right direction and I was proud to support the bill.

Another exciting development this week was the adoption of six amendments that I offered in the Committee on Homeland Security. One of the six, the "Finish the Fence" amendment orders the federal government to finish construction of a border fence between the United States and Mexico. The Secure Fence Act of 2006 requires the Department of Homeland Security to construct no less than 700 miles of reinforced fencing on the Southwest border. To date, the Department of Homeland Security has constructed a little over 600 miles of fencing, and has no plans to finish the 700 mile project as required by law. My amendment reminds the Obama Administration of its obligation to abide by federal law and its responsibility to honor a promise made to the American people.

Given the recent reports that the Iranian government conspired with Mexican drug cartels to carry out acts of terror in the United States, now more than ever, we must secure our border and enforce our immigration laws. That's why I immediately introduced H Res 429 to document what we know of Iran's activity in the Western Hemisphere, and urge the Administration to properly address the threat Iran poses to the United States.

As you can tell, this has been a busy and productive week in Washington. I'm looking forward to being back in South Carolina, continuing to listen to your concerns.

Yours in Liberty,

Jeff Duncan
