Shelby Statement on CLASS Act Abandonment

Press Release

Date: Oct. 14, 2011

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced the department's decision to abandon the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) program. U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL), ranking member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor/HHS), vocally opposed this program because it is financially unsustainable and a major risk to taxpayers. Senator Shelby, who was instrumental in defunding the program in FY 2012, issued the following statement regarding HHS's announcement:

"In an era of overpromised entitlements, CLASS is an irresponsible, poorly designed program that would lead to a fiscal disaster for the taxpayer. The department has finally seen the writing on the wall and acknowledged what I have said continuously since ObamaCare was enacted -- the CLASS program is financially unsustainable and should be abandoned. In the wake of the department's decision, I will continue to fight vigorously to repeal and replace ObamaCare."
