Speaker Boehner Meets With South Korean President Lee Myung-bak

Statement

Date: Oct. 13, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) met with President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea today prior to his address to a joint meeting of Congress. Boehner issued the following statement:

"It was a pleasure to welcome President Lee, his wife, and members of his government to the Capitol. We had a good discussion about the friendship between our peoples, and our shared priorities of stability and prosperity. President Lee and I are great optimists who believe our countries will continue to grow together, especially if we make sure the opportunities we had will be available to future generations. Passage of the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement marks another milestone in our alliance, and it would not have been possible without President Lee's leadership.

"South Korea's transformation into a beacon of freedom and democracy is a tribute to the resolve of her people and their understanding of how precious these values are. We're also indebted to those Americans whose sacrifices we honor at the Korean War Memorial, which bears the words "freedom is not free.' President Lee's speech was a powerful testimonial on what free peoples accomplish when we stand together and stay true to our values. We were honored by his presence in the people's House today."
