U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement today on the announcement that Congressman Bob Turner (R-NY) has been selected to serve as a Member of the Committee. A statement from Turner also follows.
Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
"I am very excited that Congressman Turner is joining the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
"Congressman Tuner understands the importance of standing up for our allies. During his campaign, Bob was outspoken in his support for our key ally, Israel, and a strong opponent of the unilateral Palestinian scheme to seize statehood at the United Nations. Already, he has signed on as a co-sponsor of legislation that will withhold U.S. funding to any UN agency that upgrades that status of the Palestinian mission at the UN.
"Congressman Turner is joining a GOP Committee roster that is committed to aggressively addressing threats to our national security and standing up for American interests, allies, and values abroad. Bob will be a great addition and I am pleased to have him on board."
Statement by Turner:
"On the Foreign Affairs Committee, I intend to forward my beliefs that it is in our national interest to defend our Middle East ally, Israel, and I will oppose further attempts by the U.N. to recognize a Palestinian state. I am honored to have been asked to serve on such a significant committee with international implications and look forward to working with Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and my fellow committee members."
