Rep. Farenthold Introduces a Bill to Reform the Lifeline Program

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Blake Farenthold (TX-27) introduced H.R. 3118, the Lifeline Reform Act as part of the GOP's YouCut Program. He had the following remarks:

"Today, I introduced the Lifeline Reform Act to eliminate the taxpayer funded free cell phone program paid for by the Universal Services Fund. These "free" cell phones come at cost to hardworking American taxpayers because the program is funded by a tax on phone service. Ending duplicative and wasteful government programs will save taxpayers money and put our country back on a path to fiscal prosperity."

The YouCut program is an initiative through the Majority Leader's Office. Each week, three duplicative or wasteful government programs are put to a vote on the Majority Leader's website. The program that receives the most votes is turned into legislation that will cut spending and grow our economy. The Lifeline Program was voted on the week of July 11th.
