Vitter Comments on Religious Persecution in Iran

Statement

Date: Sept. 30, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. David Vitter today made the following statement about reports that the government of Iran intends to carry out a death sentence against an Iranian Christian pastor:

"I'm deeply troubled by the reports about the death sentence against Iranian pastor Yousef Nadarkhani for his refusal to renounce his Christian faith. This not only violates his fundamental rights, it is an attack on the God-given freedom of conscience that belongs to every human being.

"I join the calls for our State Department to strongly oppose this evil act of injustice by the Iranian regime. And I join many others in praying for the courage of Pastor Nadarkhani and his family in the face of such grave persecution," said Vitter.
