U.S. Rep. Karen Bass Applauds Decision to Extend Voting Rights to Saudi Women, Presses for More Progress

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Karen Bass issued the following statement in the wake of news that women of Saudi Arabia will be given the right to vote and run for election:

"Saudi King Abdullah has made an important step in the right direction with his announcement to include women in the electoral process in the coming years. And although this is welcome news, it is one step on a very long road for women's rights in Saudi Arabia. As of today, it is still illegal for Saudi women to travel alone or drive themselves--to the polls or anywhere else--and I continue my support for the women who have stood up to these laws. I hope to see initial follow through on the commitment to voting freedoms, but ultimately, more significant progress."
