On September 22, 2011, Congressman Steve Rothman (NJ-9) wrote a letter to Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe expressing concern over the potential closure of the New Jersey Metro Processing and Distribution center in Teterboro, NJ and the New Jersey Logistics and Distribution Center in Kearny, NJ. These facilities are among 252 U.S. Postal service processing facilities being considered for consolidation throughout the nation.

Dear Postmaster General Donahoe:
I write to express my concerns about plans to consolidate the U.S. Postal Service mail processing network. I understand that the Northern New Jersey Metro Processing and Distribution center in Teterboro and the New Jersey Logistics and Distribution Center in Kearny, which are in my Congressional District, are among the 252 processing facilities being studied for consolidation.
While I understand the difficult financial situation the Postal Service faces, and the necessity of finding efficiencies in order to achieve long-term financial stability, I am concerned about the negative impact that consolidation will have on my constituents.
I am particularly concerned about the potential impact on the speed of mail delivery that consolidating 252 processing facilities around the country will have. At a time when the Postal Service is struggling to compete against private delivery services and the internet, it is more important than ever to ensure that USPS customers can depend on reliable and fast mail delivery.
I am also concerned about the fate of the 1,336 employees who currently work at the Teterboro and Kearny mail processing facilities. It is my understanding that these workers will be forced to move to other facilities, and in some cases, potentially face layoffs. I strongly urge you to take into account the impact that consolidation would have on these hard working men and women before making your decision.
