Location: Birmingham, AL
Issues: Transportation

Saying that it will create thousands of jobs and promote safety, Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-6) is calling for timely construction of the Northern Beltline highway project in the Birmingham area.

Congressman Bachus today publicly released a letter of support for the Northern Beltline that he wrote to Alabama Department of Transportation Director John Cooper. ALDOT is holding public hearings in connection with the project in Gardendale tonight and Bessemer tomorrow night.

"We have an opportunity to aggressively fund and complete the Northern Beltline, and we cannot take our eyes off the goal. The completion of the Northern Beltline is essential to future economic growth in the Birmingham area and it is finally time to close the loop! This project has my full support because I believe it will have a significant positive impact on our community while improving air quality and motorist safety at the same time," Congressman Bachus said in the letter.

Bachus has worked to ensure funding for the completion of the project, which has been one of his top priorities as a representative in Congress. An economic impact study authored by the University of Alabama Center for Business and Economic Research estimated that the project would create almost 70,000 direct and indirect jobs and, during the construction phase alone, would have a $7 billion impact on the state's economy.
