Costello Announces HHS and DOE Grants for Southern Illinois University Carbondale

U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE):

* $436,453 from the National Center for Complimentary & Alternative Medicine of HHS for a research project, directed by Joseph Laton Cheatwood, titled "Effects of Dietary Soy Compounds on Stroke Outcomes."
* $120,000 from DOE for a project titled "First Principles Based Simulation of Reaction-induced Phase Transition in Hydrogen Storage and Other Materials."

"Investing in scientific research is an important component of the federal budget," said Costello. "This is another example of SIUC's standing as a leading research facility, and I will continue to support these efforts."
