U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) issued the following statement regarding President Obama's address on jobs today, in which he called on Congress to pass clean extensions of the federal surface transportation bill and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill:
"I applaud the President for his speech today urging Congress to move forward with an extension of the federal highway bill and the FAA reauthorization bill. Both of these bills make strong investments in our nation's infrastructure and transportation systems, creating and protecting American jobs. As a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I have seen the critical benefits of infrastructure investment, which creates jobs and boosts our economic recovery. Furthermore, as we move forward with our plans for national infrastructure investment, it is crucial that we include repairing and improving America's levees as a part of this process. As the President emphasized in his address today, federal agencies have been directed to specifically seek out projects that are funded and ready to go, and this includes a number of important projects in our region. We should move forward on these projects as quickly as possible."
