Senator John Kerry today released a statement following President Barack Obama's decision to issue a major disaster declaration in Massachusetts for areas devastated by Hurricane Irene.
The President's decision will provide federal aid to families and individuals in Berkshire and Franklin counties, including grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover after the disaster.
"President Obama's disaster declaration will help thousands in Berkshire and Franklin counties restore their lives and livelihoods. Help is on the way. Irene's devastating rains and winds battered Massachusetts with extensive flooding, high waters, downed trees, and thousands of homes without power. Today, the recovery and rebuilding process gets a boost and everyone still reeling can breathe a deep sigh of relief," said Sen. Kerry.
Residents and business owners in Berkshire and Franklin counties may begin applying for aid today by registering online at www.disasterassistance.com or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
