With the start of football season approaching, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) issued the following statement commending the National Football League (NFL) for implementing its new drug testing policy. Bono Mack oversees the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, which has jurisdiction over sports-related matters.
"As co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Youth Drug Prevention, I commend the NFL and the NFL players for reaching an agreement that allows for random testing for human growth hormone (HGH) to detect and prevent the use of these dangerous performance enhancing drugs. The use of performance enhancing drugs creates a significant risk to the health and safety of players at every level, and threatens the integrity of the game.
"The new NFL drug policy will serve as an important example to those young people who seek to emulate their gridiron heroes, and send an important message about playing and competing in a fair and clean manner.
"It is my firm belief that the sooner the NFL implements the new testing program the better it will be for the sport and its players. The NFL is making the right move by testing for HGH, and I am ready to support them in Congress as they undertake this important and potentially life-saving program."
