I'm sorry we missed you at our Health Care Reform Town Hall this past Sunday. We had a packed auditorium and received hundreds of questions from the audience about the Affordable Care Act.
During the town hall, I provided the political landscape for the Affordable Care Act in the 112th Congress. Republicans have made repeal and defunding health care reform their number one priority. I want to remind you of the need to get involved to protect the progress made by President Obama and the benefits under the new law.
Herb Schultz, Regional Director, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), presented the Affordable Care Act 101, an overview of the new law's provisions to expand coverage, protect consumers, and reduce health care costs. Click here to view an archived version of his presentation. HHS will be holding three interactive conference calls discussing the benefits and provisions of the Affordable Care Act on August 23rd at 5 pm, August 31st at 9:30 am, and September 14th at 9:30am PT. If you would like to join one of the calls, RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dave Jones, California Insurance Commissioner, summarized recent rate hikes and his responsibility as Insurance Commissioner to review rate increases. He called on town hall participants to support California Assembly Bill 52 which would give him the authority to reject excessive health insurance rate increases. This bill is a necessary improvement to keeping consumer insurance rates low and will be voted on by the California Senate this week.
