Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that $36,097 has been awarded to Southern Iowa Research, Conservation and Development for small business development projects based in Creston. The funding comes from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Rural Business Enterprise Grant program. The funds will be used to assist with the "Facilitating Rural Enterprises" program, which will provide technological assistance, business workshops, web-based learning modules and on-site technological assistance for various business needs. The counties benefiting from the funding are: Adair, Adams, Clarke, Decator, Madison, Montgomery, Ringgold, Taylor and Union.

"Our small businesses are the backbone of our communities and grants like this one are vital for our growth and development," Harkin said. "It is imperative for our hard-working small businesses in Iowa to continue to advance, learn and grow so they are better able to flourish in these tough economic times."

Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee and the Appropriations subcommittee that funds USDA.
