Issue Position: Agriculture and Rural Issues - Rural Development - Rural Schools

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2011

Senator Franken is proud to advocate for Minnesota's rural schools as a member of the Senate Rural Education Caucus.

Rural schools often cover large geographic areas and have smaller school populations and fewer financial resources. These unique challenges often put them at a disadvantage in securing federal grants, and Senator Franken supports the Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP) to help rural schools overcome these challenges. REAP helps small and rural schools secure federal funds, especially in high-poverty rural school districts. As REAP comes up for reauthorization, Senator Franken will advocate for improving the program and increasing the funding for rural schools.
