WHEN IT COMES TO FAMILY VALUES, I BELIEVE IN THE FOLLOWING CORE PRINCIPLES -

President George Washington said it best when, in 1796, he wrote, "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them."

I truly believe that we, as a nation, must never forget that our rights come from the Almighty, and that the Judeo-Christian values that have sustained humanity for millenia; marriage between a man and a woman, respect for life, and a common sense of right and wrong, should be reflected in our government

Having said that, I also believe that the true wisdom of our founders came from their acknowledgment that in a nation as large as ours, values and morality in our part of the country may not necessarily be the same as other parts of the country. Therefore, I fully support the federalist idea that states and localities should be able to determine what they will and will not sanction. A federal judge in San Francisco should no more tell the residents of District 12 what they should and should not allow, then we should tell them.

There are certain rights guaranteed to all Americans. But those rights are enumerated and restricted to the plain text of the Constitution. That judicial philosophy keeps power in the hands of citizens and not in the hands of a robed oligarchy. As Justice Scalia has said, "If you think aficionados of a living Constitution want to bring you flexibility, think again. You think the death penalty is a good idea? Persuade your fellow citizens to adopt it. You want a right to abortion? Persuade your fellow citizens and enact it. That's flexibility."

I will use my position to advocate for the defeat of any federal statute or decision that attempts to reach beyond the scope of the federal government, as well as continue to advocate for a pro-family and pro-life agenda.

WITH THOSE PRINCIPLES TO GUIDE ME, I SUPPORT -

* Life -- from conception to natural death

* Marriage defined as between one man and one woman

* Banning partial birth abortion

* Reforming education to allow parents to choose the best school for their children

* Reforming health care to give parents and families greater choice and price options

* Protecting the 1st Amendment right to free speech and worship, including public displays of faith

* Protecting the right to worship or not worship as one sees fit

* Banning embryonic stem cell research

* Reducing taxes to give families more money spend on what they need, rather than what the government needs

* Protecting the 1st Amendment rights of all Americans to the free exercise of their religion, not creating a freedom from religion
