Statement

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement today on the news that Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is continuing to block critical democracy assistance to Cuba amid reports that Senator John Kerry (D-MA) has lifted his hold on the funds:

"Although I am pleased that Senator Kerry has lifted his objection to the Cuba democracy promotion programs, it is disappointing that this valuable assistance to the people of Cuba continues to be held hostage by his colleague, Senator Leahy.

"The people of Cuba certainly don't deserve to be victims of this type of political wrangling or manipulation. Each day this hold remains is another day that those seeking freedom and democracy on the island are denied the critical assistance these programs would provide."
