REP. DANNY K. DAVIS (D-IL) VOTES IN FAVOR OF RAISING THE DEBT CEILING. PLEASED THAT SAFETY NET PROGRAMS LEFT UNTOUCHED.
Why I Support Increasing the Debt Ceiling? While I am not excited about voting in favor of raising the debt ceiling, an increase is in the best interest of our nation's economy and standing in the world; default is not an option. The agreement presented to the Congress was not perfect; there were no revenue measures that will offset many of the spending cuts that will be required; it does, however protect Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid and food stamp programs that are a safety net for the elderly and poor.
I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to turn the conversation back to getting our nation's citizens to work though adequate investments and innovative solutions to stimulate our economy and develop a strong working class.
