Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama announced the next round of fuel efficiency standards to cut carbon pollution for cars and light-duty trucks:
"Today's announcement by President Obama builds on the efforts of Democrats in Congress to improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles on the road, save families money, and reduce harmful emissions. Democrats are proud to have worked with President Bush in a bipartisan way and led the charge for an historic increase in fuel efficiency standards -- the first such action in 32 years.
"As the nation joins with California to adopt tough standards, we recognize that this moment couldn't have happened without California leading the way. This move will encourage American entrepreneurship, as innovators race to build the next generation of fuel-efficient vehicles. And it will underscore the truth that we all have a stake in addressing the greatest challenge of our time: the climate crisis.
"Congress made an historic commitment to the auto industry to drive innovation and modernization, and to save hundreds of thousands of jobs. The industry has now revitalized itself with the help of the actions taken by the Democratic Congress. And Democrats in Congress will continue to work with the Obama Administration to secure our clean energy future now and to create good-paying American jobs."
