Van Hollen Statement on House Debt Ceiling Gridlock

Statement

Date: July 29, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member on the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on Speaker Boehner's failure to pass legislation to raise the debt ceiling.

"The last 24 hours have confirmed what many suspected -- that while the tea party Republicans are a noisy and effective protest movement, they are unfit for governing. The time for Speaker Boehner's "adult moment' is now. Unfortunately, House Republicans are moving in the wrong direction -- further away from responsible compromise. True leadership will require the Speaker to recognize that, for the good of the country, he can no longer cater to only his conference. He must work across the political aisle to fashion a sensible solution."
