STATEMENT OF CONGRESSMAN LINDER ON PRESIDENT BUSH'S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY NOMINATION

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Linder (R-GA) made the following statement this evening in response to President Bush's acceptance speech for the Republican Party nomination:

"In tonight's speech, President Bush laid out his vision for the future. This vision includes the importance of spreading freedom and liberty around the world, continuing our fight against terrorism, and doing what is necessary to make our homeland safe. It outlines his desire for a safer world and his plans to create a better future for all Americans.

"In addition to his leadership in the war against terrorism, it takes a true visionary leader to understand that government must change with the times to make people's lives easier and give them a chance to realize their full potential. That is why President Bush discussed his interest in simplifying the complex and antiquated U.S. tax code. I have come to the conclusion that a national retail sales tax should be the preferred fundamental tax reform plan, and I am delighted that President Bush has provided the critical leadership to begin a serious national debate on this issue. Fundamental tax reform will do much to energize the economy, create more jobs, and create a better future for all Americans."
