Providing for the defense of our country is the federal government's primary Constitutional responsibility. This is a duty I take very seriously. Ensuring the safety and security of America means taking care of those who sacrifice their lives to defend it.
Our country remains under threat from terrorism, and we can't allow Afghanistan to turn back into a safe haven for those who wish to see America's destruction. I oppose setting arbitrary withdrawal dates without meeting measurable goals. That would be dangerous for America and would jeopardize any successes we have achieved in the region. I will also work to ensure our troops have the support and resources they need so that we have a safer America, and our brave men and women can return home as soon as possible.
America's support for our troops doesn't stop once active duty ends. We must ensure our returning and current veterans have access to health care and help to successfully transition back to civilian life. Honoring the hard work by those in the military has long been a commitment of mine. As a State Representative, my first bill was a bipartisan proposal to give tax relief to business owners serving in the military. I will continue to keep my commitment to those who have risked their lives to keep our country safe.
