Deficits and debt matter. That is why I have voted to cut nearly $50 billion from the President's 2011 budget and I expect to have to make additional cuts.
However, you cannot have credibility on cutting the deficit and controlling the debt unless the economy is growing. That is why I am working to implement a forward thinking plan that invests in our economic growth to create jobs.
Congress also needs to change its spending ways. All new federal spending or tax cuts need to have a source of funding identified to pay for them. I back a three-year spending freeze on all general non-defense spending in the budget. Congress needs to restore fiscal responsibility and accountability to the defense procurement process. And if we are serious about deficits, it is hard to justify the continuation of the Bush tax cuts for the top 2 percent of taxpayers.
