Congressman Larry Bucshon Votes to "Cut, Cap, and Balance' Our Nation's Spending

Date: July 19, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

"This is a responsible, serious plan to restore certainty to our nation's finances. The Cut, Cap, and Balance Act cuts up the credit cards and puts us on a path to fiscal restraint. It is the only plan that has been presented and shows leadership on this issue. We cannot continue to borrow over 40 cents of every dollar we spend.

While we are working to solve this problem, President Obama has continued with the empty rhetoric and political speeches, not a plan. The lack of leadership from President Obama is troubling and does nothing to resolve the issue that we spend too much. There is not a revenue problem in this country, but a spending problem. The President stated that we do not need a balanced budget amendment to do our jobs. Clearly, by submitting yearly budgets with record deficits over $1 trillion, President Obama demonstrates that Washington, D.C. must have safeguards in place to prevent overspending and to protect taxpayers' dollars. For decades, Washington, D.C. has shown it cannot control spending and balance the budget consistently. Previous tax increases to generate revenue have led to more spending and not deficit reducing measures.

Just last week, the state of Indiana announced a budget surplus of $1.18 billion due to the state government's approach to cut and cap spending and balance the budget. If states like Indiana can show fiscal restraint and make responsible decisions, then the Federal Government should as well. Many Hoosiers are being forced to make tough financial decisions in their own personal lives. We have an obligation to do the same so we can get out of this mess, get hardworking Americans in jobs, and ensure we don't reach this point again."
