Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2011

For over 50 years, my family has run a successful small business. I am committed to enacting policies that will foster the spirit of entrepreneurship and allow the flexibility required for the success of small business. I will work with my colleagues to make strategic investments into capital access for American small businesses that allow for more job creation on Main Street. As an experienced small business owner, I understand that increasing government regulation presents a serious challenge to the continued viability of small businesses. Not only does this type of government interference disproportionately punish small businesses, it also increases the risk for entrepreneurs considering starting a new business. Instead of creating roadblocks, Washington needs to start creating opportunities for prosperity for American businesses.

America's greatness was built by hard-working people looking to make a better life. The American way has proven to be the most effective method to ensure that small business has the freedom to create jobs for American workers and provide consumers with the goods and services they demand.

Bill that I am a co-sponsor of:

H.R.4, Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act of 2011 - The health care bill contained a provision that will require business owners to submit a separate 1099 to the IRS and to every company with whom they do business that totals more than $600 in a given year. This will cost small businesses greatly because of the necessary costs of paperwork, attorney and accountant fees, etc. Small business is leading America's economic recovery, but an overwhelming burden of federal paperwork, rules, and regulations, like this threatens their competitiveness and ability to spur job creation.

H.R. 334, End the Lame Duck Act, which would require that, prior to the general election, Congress would adjourn until the commencement of the next Congress. Any appropriation bills not passed by Election Day would be subject to a continuing resolution at the previous fiscal year's level. Only a declared national emergency, which requires the agreement of both the majority and minority leadership, would allow Congress to be called into session.

H.R. 421, The Full Faith and Credit Act - Requires the authority of the Department of the Treasury to pay the principal and interest on debt held by the public to take priority over all other obligations incurred by the government in the event the federal debt reaches the statutory limit.

H.R. 59, The Sunset All Czars Act - Prohibits the use of appropriated funds to pay for any salaries or expenses of any task force, council, policy office within the Executive Office of the President, or similar office that is established by or at the direction of the President and is headed by a Czar. Defines "Czar" as the head of any such office who: (1) is appointed to such position (other than on an interim basis) without the advice and consent of the Senate, (2) is excepted from the competitive service, (3) performs or delegates functions which would be performed or delegated by an individual appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate if not for the establishment of such task force or office, and (4) does not have an existing removal date.
