Issue Position: Good Governance

Issue Position

At the most fundamental level, good governance is about implementing policies that promote a strong, transparent, and participatory government that is accountable and ethical. Fostering a vigorous civil society and strong grass-roots organizations is equally important.

While the U.S. does a great deal to promote good governance abroad, there is much we can do right here in America to make our government lead by example, and be a better partner with local communities.

Congressman Blumenauer believes that good governance in America is about overcoming political gridlock, rebuilding and renewing America's crumbling infrastructure, holding business and financial institutions accountable, holding elected officials accountable to ethics guidelines, promoting efficiency in government programs, ensuring all U.S. citizens can vote and are afforded full representation, reduces pollution, fighting against climate change, and most importantly, investing in America's future so that our children inherit a better world is crucial.

An effective government needs the support of its citizens. Blumenauer has fought in the House for legislation that promotes good governance to restore the public confidence in Congress.

Redistricting and Reapportionment: Congressman Blumenauer believes that one of the greatest challenges to good governance in America is to make the political process work better. A more transparent and accountable redistricting and reapportionment process that guarantees fairness and equity is key.

Performance Based Regulations: Congressman Blumenauer believes that there is an opportunity to refocus the age-old debate about regulations in a more productive way: making regulations performance-based that promote outcomes, not burdensome obstacles. Accordingly, Congressman Blumenauer welcomed President Obama's executive order that called for a review and refinement of U.S regulations.

Elections and Campaign Finance Reform: In the 112th Congress, Representative Blumenauer has worked hard to protect our electoral process from the disproportionate influence awarded to corporations through the Citizens United vs Federal Elections Commission ruling.
