DirecTV Advance Furthers Consumer Access to Local Programming.
Congressman Smith issued the following statement regarding DirecTV and high definition programming:
"Yesterday's announcement by DirecTV is good news for American consumers who enjoy viewing their local channels via satellite. It proves that the protection of intellectual property rights and the promotion of local programming do not have to be sacrificed to spur the transition to high definition (HD) programming.
"When it launches two next generation satellites in 2005, DirecTV will be able to provide local HD broadcast programming to most Americans by the middle of next year. When two more satellites are launched in 2007, DirecTV will have the capability to retransmit more than 1,000 additional local HD channels, providing local HD programming to every U.S. household."
