Issue Position: Defense and National Security

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2011

As an Army veteran with 24 years of service, I look forward to continuing this strong tradition on the House Armed Services Committee. My priority is ensuring that our troops and their families have the resources they need and deserve, and that we can bring our conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan to a rapid and successful conclusion. We also need to institute reforms to make certain our defense dollars are spent judiciously and effectively, particularly in light of our trying economic times.

Additionally, as we bring a rapid and successful conclusion to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I believe the time is right to begin to look at comprehensive defense reform. We are asking too much of our military. We need to review requirements, change our footprint and command and control posture so that we continue to have the world's premiere fighting force, but reform our national security establishment so that we protect our cherished way of life in a manner that is consistent for a Republic.
