In reaction to last week's report by President Obama that Social Security checks may not be distributed due to failure to increase the debt ceiling, Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) joined six other House colleagues in introducing the Social Security Check Guarantee Act, H.R. 2581. The bill, introduced by Congressman Bill Posey (R-Fla.), guarantees that the public debt limit shall not affect timely payment in full of Social Security benefits.
"The possibility of denying Social Security checks is a betrayal to seniors. President Obama should focus on cutting frivolous government spending and allowing seniors to keep their retirement money. Now is the time to cut and cap federal spending and balance the budget, so we can prevent future threats on today's and tomorrow's seniors," said Congressman Latta.
Last Tuesday, President Obama told CBS News that he "cannot guarantee that those [Social Security] checks go out on August 3 if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it."
