Alaskan Congressman Don Young voted in favor of H.R. 2219, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for 2012. H.R. 2219 contains $530.5 billion in non-emergency, discretionary budget authority for the Department of Defense (DoD). H.R. 2219 also includes $118 billion in emergency contingency spending for overseas operations to fight the global war on terrorism, especially in Afghanistan and Iraq. Combined, H.R. 2219 provides a total of $649.2 billion in budget authority, $9 billion below the President's combined request for 2012.
"Defense Appropriations are incredibly important, especially now, with our ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Rep. Young. "It's also important that we are fully funding our military, while being aware of our spending and making appropriate cuts where we can. I'm proud that Alaskans contribute so much to our military operations. Members of the military in Alaska, and their families, are an incredibly special group of people, and I respect, support, and appreciate the sacrifices they make on behalf of our freedom."
