On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment offered by Representatives Justin Amash (MI-03) and Pete Sessions (TX-32) to strike Section 8015 of the Department of Defense Appropriations bill. Section 8015 prohibits the Department of Defense from contracting out to the private sector when savings are less than $10 million, or 10 percent of the Department's performance costs.
The amendment passed 212 to 208.
"While Washington bureaucrats may scoff at saving $9.9 million, every contract that is made more expensive drives us further into debt. People back home recognize that it's immoral to saddle our children and grandchildren with even one more dime of wasteful spending," said Amash.
Public-private competitions lower costs by between 10 and 40 percent according to independent studies conducted by both the private and public sector.
