President Changes Military Condolence Policy

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement on President Obama's announcement of a change in policy for condolence letters for the families of military personnel who commit suicide while deployed in a combat zone.

"The President made the right decision in reversing the long-standing policy of not sending letters of condolence to families of military personnel who have committed suicide. War takes an incredible toll on the men and women in uniform and sometimes they aren't given the care they deserve. These service men and women served our country, their families deserve our gratitude and sympathy and they should not be forgotten."
