Lamborn Statement on President's Decision to Tap Strategic Oil Reserves

Statement

Date: June 23, 2011

"Every American welcomes the possibility of lower gasoline prices, but tapping this emergency reserve will bring only temporary relief. What this country needs is an energy policy that will reduce energy costs for the long-term.

"The Reserve is meant to be used only in the event of a national energy emergency -- such as a sudden, unexpected drop in access to petroleum. Instead, our current shortage is neither sudden nor unexpected. It is the result of the Obama Administration's misguided no-energy policies. Whether onshore or offshore, President Obama is blocking efforts to increase domestic energy production.

"What we need is a sensible energy policy to increase the supply of American energy, which will lower costs and create millions of American jobs. According to the Congressional Research Service, the U.S. has 163 billion barrels of recoverable oil. As part of the American Energy Initiative in the House, my Republican colleagues and I have passed numerous bills so far this session to increase our access to those sources. The Senate has yet to pass any of them." - Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05)
