I announced last month that the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation has selected 54 new projects in western states to receive funding under their WaterSMART Water and Energy Efficiency Grant program, including one project of the Imperial Irrigation District (IID). A total of $28,825 was awarded to the IID for their East Highline Power Plant Flow Meter, half of the total cost of the project. This is exactly the type of infrastructure projects in our communities that should be funded!
The Imperial Irrigation District will automate hydropower plants along the All-American Canal by replacing existing governor controls with digital control systems to improve accuracy of inflow measurements to the power plant. This project is expected to reduce spills by improving management of the water that flows through the hydro-plant, resulting in estimated water savings of 1,460 acre-feet per year.
