Michaud Statement on Supreme Court's Decision on Clean Elections

Statement

Date: June 27, 2011
Location: Bangor, ME
Issues: Elections

Today, Congressman Mike Michaud issued the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision on McComish v. Bennett, a case which could impact Maine's clean election system:

"I'm disappointed in the court's decision today. There is little question that this decision on Arizona's statute will have an adverse impact on Maine's clean election system. Maine voters supported our clean elections system, it continues to have an extremely high participation rate, and it's worked well for years. Those running for office should spend their time talking to voters and debating the issues, not worrying about raising money or being buried by special interest attack ads. I believe it's important to find a way forward that preserves our state's current system, and I applaud the Maine Legislature for planning ahead and taking steps to comply with today's decision."
