Senator John Kerry today issued the following statement on behalf of the family of Sergeant Matthew Gallagher of Falmouth, who was killed Sunday in Iraq's Wasit province, and asking media outlets to respect the privacy of the Gallagher family in their time of grief:
"All of Massachusetts mourns with the Gallagher family at this unbelievably difficult time. I know that the last thing any of us want to do is unintentionally add to the pain they are facing. The Gallagher family has asked me to convey their request for privacy at this time, and to ask the media to please send any inquiries to my office rather than to the family. The official investigation into the details of this tragedy is ongoing. A statement from the Army regarding Matthew's death will be issued when the investigation is complete. I've spoken to Sergeant Gallagher's father and will continue to be in touch with the family as well as the Army in the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, we will compile all media inquiries so that this burden is not placed on the family. I appreciate the sensitivity of the media in particular to make every effort to show respect for the family's needs and allow them to mourn in private."
