U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (IL-14) tonight released the following statement following President Obama's statement on the timetable for U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan; President Obama's timetable reduces the U.S. presence more quickly than that suggested by his military advisers.
"The American people are growing increasingly frustrated and fatigued by our presence in Afghanistan and its human and financial costs," said Hultgren, who recently visited Afghanistan as part of a bipartisan Congressional Delegation. "But while I share their frustrations and concerns, I have also seen with my own eyes the progress we are making there. President Obama's precipitous withdrawal -- faster than was advised by our military commanders -- threatens to undermine the progress we have made there. Our withdrawal from Afghanistan should be at a more measured pace, one that solidifies the immense progress we have made over the last two years while assuring that the Afghans are able to shoulder the burdens of defending their country."
