Rep. Fudge's Statement on the Drawdown of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) made this statement in response to President Obama's speech on US troop levels in Afghanistan:

"The President is rightfully taking steps to draw down U.S. troops in Afghanistan. It is time to rapidly accelerate that draw down and place the security of Afghanistan in the hands of Afghans. We're currently spending $2.3 billion per week, depleting resources that are vitally needed to strengthen America's economy and get our people back to work. We need to rebuild our nation. This is the will of the people I represent," said Congresswoman Fudge.

"I honor our courageous troops for their service, but it is time to bring them home to their families. Enough of our men and women have given their lives and made sacrifices for the longest war in American history, and I'm dedicated to providing assistance to every veteran upon his or her return from active duty," said Congresswoman Fudge.

1,600 troops have been killed and 11,191 have been wounded in Operation Enduring Freedom (the Afghanistan War), and the human toll of the war continues to mount every day. 2010 was the deadliest year of conflict, with 499 American service members killed. 2011 is on pace exceed that toll, with 173 American casualties since January.

"Keeping America safe does not require 100,000 troops in Afghanistan. We must change direction immediately, which is why I signed a bipartisan letter with my colleagues in the House to encourage the draw down."
