Congressman David Wu released the following statement tonight after President Obama addressed the nation to outline steps toward withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan:
"With Osama bin Laden dead and al-Qaeda dismantled in Afghanistan, most of our original goals have been met--it is time to seize the opportunity to reset our priorities. The president's proposal to withdraw 33,000 American troops by next summer is just a down payment toward further troop reductions. We must refocus our national resources toward supporting our economic recovery and addressing other pressing domestic needs. The president's speech tonight did not go far enough to define an end to the longest war in American history."
